About the Electorate

The Western Metropolitan Region comprises eleven lower house Districts in Melbourne’s western metropolitan area. It has five members of Parliament, each elected to a fixed 4-year term. If you live in one of the 11 lower house districts, you are also a constituent of the Western Metropolitan Region.

In some other political jurisdictions around the world, the Legislative Council would be considered the “State Senate“.

You can check the interactive Google Map on Parliament of Victoria’s “Find my electorate” page showing the lower house (District) and upper house (Region) boundaries. Note that this map shows the existing current boundaries (that will not be in effect at the next election).

You can also check out the EBC’s online interactive map where you can see the new 2022 boundaries.

You can also find more details about the electorate on the Victorian Electoral Commission website (maps are also available to download).

New Boundary Changes for 2022

The 2020-21 State electoral boundary redivision concluded on 28 October 2021. A report on the final boundaries is now available on the Electoral Boundaries Commission website. This means these new State electoral boundaries will take effect when the writ for the 2022 State election is issued on 1 November 2022.

The Electoral Boundaries Commission (EBC)’s final report

As noted in the report:

“Western Metropolitan Region is the largest Legislative Council (Upper House) electorate by enrolment in Victoria, with an enrolment 6.88% above the state average. It includes some of the fastest-growing areas in the state in the City of Wyndham and along the Western Freeway to Melton. As a result, Altona and Tarneit districts’ enrolments were more than 20% above the state average as at 30 November 2020, Kororoit District was 10% to 20% above average, and Footscray and Sydenham districts were approaching the 10% threshold. In the north-western suburbs, the population has dipped below average in Niddrie, St Albans and Sunbury districts and enrolment patterns were more stable. Based on both current electors and population trends, there were enough electors in Western Metropolitan Region to justify the creation of a new district.”

From the 2022 election, Western Metropolitan Region will represent the Legislative Assembly districts of:

  • Derrimut
  • Footscray
  • Kelior
  • Kororoit
  • Laverton (new)
  • Niddrie
  • Pascoe Vale
  • Point Cook (new)
  • Sunbury
  • Tarneit and
  • Williamstown
